Snap poll bad news for DUP

SIR, I read both the DUP's half page advert in your paper two weeks ago and Jim Allister's reply in last week's paper. The claim and counterclaim got me thinking about the forthcoming election, and its potential outcome in North Antrim.

I talked to 37 friends and associates in North Antrim whom I know to have been solid DUP voters in the past and asked them how they intended to vote in the General Election. 23 intend to vote TUV. 8 for the UUP. 3 are undecided and 3 refused to answer the question.

If I include my own family in this poll 3 out 4 will also vote TUV. I realise this is a very small poll, but if it is replicated throughout North Antrim it is very bad news for the DUP.

Interestingly, we all agreed that for almost 35 of his 40years as the peoples voice, Ian Paisley Snr. was an excellent elected representative of the people, and only in the latter years did he and his party ignore the wishes of the electorate in North Antrim.

It is said if you want to predict the future look to the past. Ian Paisley Snr’s political career began in North Antrim because he listened to, and acted on the wishes of the electorate.

Now, Jim Allister appears to have taken over the mantle as the voice of the people, is history about to repeat itself? It may prove sensible for the DUP to conduct their own poll in the area (bearing in mind the party always had more voters than members) and if the results are similar, consider the possibility of doing in North Antrim what they have done in North Down, where they decided to withdraw leaving it a straight fight between Lady Sylvia Hermon and the UUP candidate.

Yours Sincerely,

Pro Patria.
