Stark message in road safety show

Last year ,the number of deaths on Northern Ireland’s roads was the lowest since records began - 55 in total.Although tragically 55 too many, the number of deaths contrasts sharply with the figures for the1970s.

In one year alone, 373 lives were lost. As a former schoolteacher I could sadly fill at least one classroom with the victims of road accidents.

Almost all were talented young men between the ages of 17 and 24 - a group four times more likely to be involved in an accident than any other.

On Wednesday last the PSNI Road Safe Roadshow was staged at the Leisure Centre in Banbridge for Years 12 and 13 in local schools and for students at the Southern Regional College. Although I have watched the show on a number of occasions it was a chastening experience. A numbed and silent audience of young people listened for over an hour as the very courageous participants recounted their heartbreaking stories

I only wish that the show was seen by a wider audience as it is a stark reminder to us all of the madness that occurs daily on our roads. The messages are clear and simple: No drink or drugs, if you intend to drive. Slow down. Do not use a mobile phone. Always consider other road users. Never show off.

Clearly education of all drivers has been a vital factor in reducing road casualties and all those associated with the Road Show in any way are to be warmly congratulated.
