Thanks for a weekend we’ll never forget

I would like to place on record my thanks and praise to the men from Hillsborough District No 19 for the way in which they have our beloved little village and surrounding areas decorated for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

We had our beautiful new arch opened on the 1st of June - that would be a special event anyway in the life of a community, but to have it opened on the weekend of the Diamond Jubilee was even more special and certainly for the people in attendance that evening it will be a night that will live on long in our memories.

Secondly, to the men and women of the Hillsborough Old Guard, a very big thank you for the lovely afternoon you provided for us on Saturday 2nd June in the grounds of our very historic fort.

It was a wonderful day, such a lovely sight to see flags waving, families young and old, old and new to the village all enjoying the great entertainment. It was also nice to feel the sense of community - something which sadly all too often is lacking in places like Hillsborough these days.

Finally, I would like to thank Lisburn City Council for providing a beacon and magnificent firework display at the ‘monument’ on Monday 4th June,

I am usually very critical of our council, however on this occasion they certainly, in my opinion anyway, ‘got it right’. Especially the fireworks - they were brilliant.

As a member of a family who have called Hillsborough ‘home’ for generations - thank you all again, I and my family had a weekend we will never forget.
