The greatest love story of them all

THROUGHOUT the years many great wartime stories have been written and one of the main themes was the memories of young people who met and fell in love against the horrible background of conflict.

In the last few weeks many people watched on television the world around as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip celebrated the Diamond Jubilee.

In Enniskillen the crowds gave the Royal Couple a wonderful welcome and her delight was clear in her happy relaxed manner. It seemed obvious the Queen was relieved Prince Philip had made a great recovery from his recent illness.

At Stormont the next day it was warm with beautiful sunshine and the Queen and the Duke stood together in a Landrover waving and smiling to the cheering crowds. Wherever they go people can see the close companionship they share and the glances of understanding they give each other when something draws their attention.

There have been many love stories of famous people throughout history but to me the true love story of a young princess and young naval Lieutenant when the princess was visiting a Royal Navy station with her parents, is one of the best. From that moment Princess Elizabeth never changed her mind.

The Queen has called Prince Philip her ‘rock’ from the day she became Queen. He has never let her down and has always been there for her.

Books and films would find it difficult to compete with this great love story.
