Threat remains to other PSNI stations

IN last week’s edition’s lead article you quoted my comments around Dunmurry police station correctly, but went on to attribute a statement about Hillsborough and Dromore stations to me, a statement I did not make.

A few weeks ago, again in a lead article you announced that the PSNI had agreed to keep these stations open until 2015, and regretfully I must point out that the PSNI announcement did not give that guarantee.

The statement issued 4/5/2012 states: “PSNI has acknowledged community concerns about the proposed closure of four other station (Portglenone, Hillsborough, Dromore and Broughshane) and committed to further engagement in transition to a disposal in the current CSR period which ends 1st April 2015”.

I must say that celebrating the survival of the stations until 2015 on the basis of that announcement is premature and to the groups who have led the campaigns for retention, I wish you well and you have my support, but the stations remain under threat of closure within the timescale given and not neccesarily at the end of it.

PSNI are under massive financial pressure as evidenced by the Dunmurry decision and the case will have to be made even more forcefully to justify keeping Hillsborough and Dromore as working stations.
