Time to understand more about dementia

DEMENTIA is the elephant in the room. 800,000 people in the UK are living with the condition, yet understanding of dementia remains low.

It is time for that to change. This week is Dementia Awareness Week. We must bring dementia out of the shadows, get people talking about it and get them to remember the person behind the dementia.

Everybody should know the following five things about dementia:

1. It’s not a natural part of growing old.

2. It’s caused by diseases of the brain. The most common of these is Alzheimer’s.

3. It’s not just about losing your memory – it can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks.

4. It’s possible to live well with it.

5. There’s more to a person than the dementia.

There are events happening all over the country to raise awareness of dementia. Visit www.alzheimers.org.uk/remembertheperson to find out more.
