Too much talk, too little action at the Maze

COUNCILLOR Ronnie Crawford makes some interesting points in your paper last year about the contrast between progress at the Titanic Quarter and the lack of the same at the Maze.

Whilst I can accept some element of urgency with the anniversary of the Titanic this year, I concur with Mr Crawford that the lack of progress at the Maze could hardly be more obvious.

In February the Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson told your newspaper the formal announcement about the re-location of the Balmoral Show would be made ‘this month’.

He was speaking amid the controversy which flared after it was confirmed the EU would be putting up the £18m for the conflict resolution centre. Yet here we are in the middle of March and still there is no movement.

I wish to stress I am not making any party political point. As Mr Crawford has said himself in the past, the campaign to stop Lisburn getting anything seems to have attracted cross party support in Belfast.

But surely the time has long passed for talk and promises. We are facing a dire economic situation and it is in the hands of the politicians to do something here which will improve that situation, yet they seem incapable of getting a grip.

There has been no lack of urgency in setting up an independent panel to award MLAs a hefty pay rise.

It is time for our elected politicians to put their constituents before their party and demand the First and Deputy First Ministers start delivering. Anything less will indicate they are simply not deserving of our support at the next election.
