Traffic calming measures are not calming

If only cars drove themselves, but they don’t, and traffic calming measures do not calm me. Frankly, they give me the hump.

Ever more, ever bigger, damaging cars, increasing fuel costs, lowering house prices and ruining local businesses. For what? Does anybody seriously think putting a hump on a junction makes that junction safer?

I am always dubious about government spokesmen who quote statistics, ie. a child is more likely to be killed or seriously injured if hit by a car going at 30 mph than it is by a car going at twenty mph. Hardly rocket science and undoubtedly true.

I lived in Hillhall and Old Warren. I spent a large part of my life earning a crust delivering around the estates and cannot recollect any child, or for that matter any adult, being killed by a car driven recklessly.

Our beautiful villages are not exempt. Aghagallon, where I now live, has to be seen to be believed. Be careful - since traffic calming came to this once charismatic hilltop village, the number of accidents has easily quadrupled. Stay calm Hillsborough and Moira, unnecessary road markings, mini roundabouts and humps are surely heading your direction.
