Warning for dog owners

OWNERS who walk their dogs in Hillsborough Park should keep their dogs on a lead if they take them inside the walls of the old fort.

That was the warning from Lynn Heffron, a veterinary surgeon at Cromlyn House Veterinary Hospital in Hillsborough after svereal dogs were injured this week.. Lynn said: “Recently, within a week, we treated three dogs who had been running free inside the fort and had tried to jump the relatively low perimeter wall not realising that there is a 25ft drop onto tarmac on the outside .

“Amazingly, two of the dogs were uninjured but the third sustained a major fracture of the wrist and had to undergo reconstructive surgery of the joint.”

She added: “Local people who use the park regularly may be aware of the danger but the park is also used by many visitors.

“We have spoken to the DoE manager of the site and suggested placing signs at the entrances to warn owners. Although such accidents are uncommon, such a fall could cause very serious injuries.”
