WELB to continue providing beef burgers to pupils

THE Western Education and Library Board (WELB) “has no plans to withdraw beef burgers from their menus” amid the ongoing horse meat controversy.

While the Southern Education and Library Board and the South Eastern Education and Library Board have withdrawn beef burgers from the menus in their schools, a spokesperson for the WELB said they had no such plans.

The spokesperson said: “Based on current information and assurances provided by their suppliers the Board has no plans to withdraw beef burgers from their menus. The situation is being closely monitored and if circumstances change further action may be taken.

“It should be noted that with the introduction of Nutritional Standards the vast majority of meals offered to pupils are freshly cooked using fresh local produce.”
