Orange community awards

THE top award for 'individual community involvement' in the annual Orange Community Awards, has been bestowed on members of Ardinariff Orange Heroes, LOL 905, from Roe Valley.

The Lodge was the only of the north west entries this year to make it to the winners' rostrum.

Elsewhere, a district which raised more than 16,000 following the murders of two soldiers and a police officer, was voted the best charity fund-raiser at the annual awards.

It went to Randalstown District LOL No. 22 , which has four lodges, the members of whom raised the money for the RUC/PSNI Benevolent Fund and the Royal Engineers Benevolent Fund. They decided to raise the money following the murder of two soldiers at Massareene Barracks in Antrim and the murder of a police officer in Lurgan. The money was raised primarily by the sale of a commemorative badge. More than 12,000 badges have been sold so far.

The awards ceremony was held in Cookstown and the Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, Robert Saulters, congratulated everyone who had been nominated for awards. He said that a huge amount of work was done by Orangemen in their community and too often it was overlooked.

The special guest for the evening was the Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure, Nelson McCausland.
