Organ recital at St Patrick's Church

A former organist student of St Columb's Cathedral in Londonderry will give an organ recital at St Patrick's Church, Coleraine, tomorrow, Thursday, August 4, at 12.30pm.

Ben McGonigle BMus (Hons) was Organ Scholar at St Columb’s Cathedral from 2000 to 2004 and is currently Organist and Director of Music at Christ Church in Londonderry.

He has a long and distinguished music career tucked under his belt, including serving as the conductor of a classical flute band ensemble, competing in competitions all across Ireland and the UK and directing and rehearsing the band during their participation in the 2014 production of ‘The Walled City Tattoo’.

More recently he provided live studio music for the play ‘Walking to the Ark’ performed in the Playhouse.

He is the incumbent accompanist for the Londonderry Musical Society, who perform all across Northern Ireland with their Showstoppers series and was also pianist for their last five productions performed in the Millennium Forum.

Ben was the accompanist for the successful ‘Number 7’ opera written and composed by local composer Sean Doherty which was performed in Belfast at The Mac, and he also accompanied and provided music for various charity concerts in the city, including the successful ‘Carols by Candlelight’ for the charity Childline coordinated by local woman Denise O’Boyle. He has accompanied local singers and groups in various concerts including Anne-Marie Hickey, Rionach McGlinchey, Damien McGinty, Ruth McPhillips, Laura Sheerin, Brian McNamee, and has also provided accompaniment for the Rionach McGlinchey School of Music at the Derry Feis.

He was the accompanies for ‘Cantemus’, a mixed-voice choir based in Coleraine, in various churches including St Anne’s, Belfast; have also provided relief on a number of occasions for their Musical Director Tony Morrison and over the years has performed on the Organ at various concert venues, including the Guildhall, Carlisle Road Methodist Church as part of the Fleadh Cheoil, St Columbs Cathedral, St Patricks Cathedral and in Christ Church to raise funds for the music bursary fund.
