Organisers delighted with success of Kilwacky Races

KILREA Community Forum held a walking treasure hunt and the now annual Kilwacky Races soap box derby recently.

A total of 18 participants took part in their home made karts and raced around a circuit in Coleraine Street in Kilrea.

There was also a craft fair in the Town Hall and at the Diamond along with a fancy dress parade and bouncy castles.

Running commentary was provided by Mr Sam Crockett.

The senior kart with the fastest speed of 31mph and the quickest time of 26.47 seconds was the Kilrea Primary School Kart.

The junior winner with the speed of 27mph and a time of 30.16 seconds was the Cheesy Chaser sponsored by ANS Precision Engineering, Ballymoney

One of the event organisers Patricia McQuillan said: “There was a fantastic turn out of people from wide and diverse sections of our community and everyone seemed to get on well. “

Proceeds from the events will go towards Macmillan nurses.

The event was supported and funded by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, the Coleraine District Policing Partnership and Coleraine Borough Council.

Councillor Sam Cole praised the event which was aimed at boosting community relations.

“It was heart warming to see the entire Kilrea community turning out to support their now annual summer festival and everyone joining in the fun.,” he said.

“Thanks to Coleraine Borough Council and their staff for sponsoring the races and helping out on the ground.

“Thanks also to the local shops for donations and all the schools and entrants who took part in the race. Congratulations to Kilrea Primary School who won the race and to all the prize winning teams.”
