Our Anne checks out after over 40 years at Coleraine store

A loaf of bread or a pint of silver top milk cost a mere five pence, and the average house price was just £2,530.

In that year 15-year-old Anne Kane began a part time job after school in Crazy Prices at Bridge Street, which later became Tesco.

Some 46 years on, and Anne is preparing to leave her managerial role in the Coleraine store.

The well-known Coleraine grandmother was treated to a tea party by her Coleraine colleagues in recognition of her long service.

Crazy Prices moved to their Bannside premises in 1978 and on the day the new store officially opened, Anne celebrated her tenth year of service.

Looking back, Anne recalled: “There have been many changes.

“I was just 15 when I started doing weekends, then after my o-levels I took up a full time role. “Back then we had to remember the price of every item in the store, there was no scanners then - the introduction of computers made a huge difference.”

Anne, who also worked in the Ballymoney and Ballymena store went on: “There are customers that I would have served in Crazy Prices that I still see in store today, it’s unbelievable! I am not leaving the store, I have taken retirement from management, but I will be in a few days a week. I am really looking forward to spending more time with my friends and my family, including my five grandchildren.” In the meantime Anne will be enjoying tea at the Merchant Hotel, a gift from Tesco HQ!
