Out of date licence costs dear

Ward Jonathan Felix Devlin, whose address was given as Ardowen, Craigavon, was fined £300 last Friday at a sitting of the local magistrates’ court for driving without insurance on August 18 this year.

He was also given six penalty points and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

For not having a valid driving licence he was fined £80 and for a speeding offence he was fined £100.

The court heard he was detected travelling at 56 miles per hour in a 40mph zone on the Portadown Road, Lurgan.

It transpired that his licence had expired on February 20 the previous year.

Devlin, who was not legally represented and pleaded guilty himself, said that because his licence had expired this invalidated his insurance.

In relation to the speeding offence he said he had been coming from the 60mph speed limit into the 40mph zone and had been stopped after 100 metres.
