DUP MLA Adrian McQuillan told The Times: “ No one can understand why this has happened.

“The whole thing is a mystery.

“The family live in a quiet area, they are a hardworking family, who I have never known to have any involvement with politics or the police.”

Mr McQuillan said he believed the only other possibility of the attack was ‘mistaken identity’.

Also condemning the attack, DUP councillor Sam Cole added: “The local community and especially the people residing in the neighbourhood of Lisnachrin are horrified and are now living in fear of further attacks.

“These gangsters responsible should get off the backs of the local community, there is no place for them in the Garvagh townland and there is no support for their terrorist activities and threats.

“I appeal to the PSNI to provide more resources for patrols in the area and bring those responsible before the courts.”

SDLP MLA John Dallat, said: “ No one in the farming community can understand it.

“This is a real mystery, particularly for the victim.”
