Outstanding Council debt stood at £26m

DERRY City Council’s total outstanding debt at the end of September was over £26m, Local Government Minister Alex Attwood has revealed.

The local authority owed £26,149,593.74 at September 30.

The Minister advised that Councils can borrow money from the Consolidated Fund under Section 61 (1) of the Local Government Act (NI) 1972.

It was one of the largest debts across NI with only Newtonabbey (£46,043,447.33), North Down (£28,449,132.10) and Armagh (£27,605,116.79) owing more.

The total debt across Northern Ireland’s 26 local authorities was a whopping £401,094,173.75.
