Over 600 view Carrick gun salute

Over 600 people gathered to watch last month's royal gun salute in Carrickfergus, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has said.

The event took place at Castle Green on June 11 to mark the 97th birthday of HRH, The Duke of Edinburgh.

A report presented at the July meeting of the local government authority read: "HM Lord Lieutenant for County Antrim, Mrs Joan Christie took the salute of 21 rounds, fired by 206 (Ulster) Battery Royal Artillery."

Invited guests included elected members, senior military figures, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award NI director, Cadet representatives, veterans' associations, young people from local schools and various youth organisations.

"It is estimated over 600 people viewed the salute," the report added. "A number of people commented on the Battery, who once the salute was fired and inspection complete, made an effort to remove crowd barriers and invite the public to view the guns 'up close.'"

Discussions have since taken place over the programme of gun salutes for 2019, including the potential for a future firing in Carrickfergus, members heard.
