Over fifties club launches at Gilford Community Centre

The decision to form the group, which will be known as Kindred Spirits, was taken during a public meeting of Gilford Concerned Residents Group (GCRG).

The club will operate on Wednesday afternoons from 2pm until 4pm and will be launched on March 12 at Gilford Community Centre, Stramore Road.

Membership of the club will be open to persons in the region of 50 years of age and over thereby offering an opportunity to those not yet 50 but who are keen to participate in the club. There is no upper age limit.

Mary Quinn, Vice Chair of GCRG said: “There will be a range of activities to suit a variety of interests and fitness levels.

“And for those not interested in participating in the various activities, the club presents an opportunity to meet friends and neighbours, have a chat, cup of tea/coffee and just enjoy the company and friendship on offer. It is hoped that people in the greater Gilford district will participate in the club, the more the merrier.”

The cost will be £2 per person per week.

The committee is appealing to residents to participate and to make the club that everyone wants to join - “a club that provides a first class social opportunity one that builds on the already excellent cross community relations in the area”, said Mary.

Mary has been working with a small team of volunteers namely Patricia Millar, Margaret Johnston, and Patricia Derby to research and do ‘spade work’ in a bid to create a Gilford club. The team of volunteers has increased and there is real excitement and interest in setting up a cross community and cross gender club.

Mary was elected Chairperson of the club, Harold Massey Vice-Chair, Timothy Mayes Treasurer with Patricia Derby and Margaret Johnston assistant Treasurers, Patricia Millar Secretary and Ruth McBurney assistant Secretary, Terry O’ Donnell and Ronnie Beattie were elected committee members.
