Overend steps forward for Mid Ulster Westminster election

Speculation that unionists would come together to back an agreed candidate in Mid Ulster for next year’s Westminster election appears to have been misplaced, with the selection of the UUP’s Sandra Overend.

On Tuesday, Mrs Overend who is the assembly member for the area, revealed that she would contest the seat currently held by Sinn Fein’s Francie Molloy.

In 2013, unionist unity candidate Nigel Lutton lost out to Molloy, but achieved 34 per cent of the vote, an increase of 2% on the previous unionist share of the vote in the constituency.
