Pair arrested as police probe murder of Emyvale teen

TWO men have been arrested by police investigating the murder of an Emyvale teenager who died after being assaulted during a night out with friends in Omagh.

Jason McGovern, who was 19 and from Tydavnet, was punched at a pub on John Street on Sunday last.

The popular teenager, who was involved with his local church and amateur dramatic circles, was hit a second time a short while later at the Cunningham Terrace carpark.

He then made his way to a friend’s house in Mullan village near Emyvale, where he was found dead on Monday.

The two men arrested by police in Omagh are aged 18 and 21.

The scene where Mr McGovern’s body was discovered at Emyvale was sealed off for a full Garda technical examination, as PSNI and the Garda investigated the circumstances surrounding his death.

West Tyrone Sinn Féin MLA, Declan McAleer, said the victim was the youngest of three boys.

“I am very disturbed that he was the victim of such an attack in Omagh and I am also very concerned about the increasing level of drink fuelled crime in our community,” he said.

“This is devastating news for the McGovern family. The loss of a loved one is terrible at any time of the year but made more poignant as it coincides with the beginning of the New Year.”
