PAL appeals for premises to house new counselling service

PREVENTING Addiction Larne (PAL) is seeking suitable premises for a counselling service in the town.

The group aims to open initially one day a week, providing support for substance abuse addicts and their families. The centre would be attended by a counsellor, a family support worker and a relaxation therapist.

“We need a building where we can have a reception area and maybe a couple of rooms,” said PAL spokesperson Beverly White, who revealed that the group is presently negotiating with one potential landlord.

“We have the qualified people available and ready to start, but the only thing stopping us is getting the premises. If there is anyone in Larne who can help us, we would be very glad to hear from them,” said Beverly.

“That will get us started, but it will only be the start because once we have a base then we will be able to go to funders and hopefully build up the service we can provide in th e future,” she added.

PAL presently provides a support group at Gloucester Park Day Centre on Thursdays between 7-9pm. The informal, confidential sessions over tea and biscuits are open to addicts, their families or anyone who is affected by drug, alcohol or other substance abuse.

“It’s up to individuals whether they talk or what they talk about. One girl who attends says it gives her something to focus on every week and most people have found that it really does make all the difference being able to talk to somebody,” said Beverly.

PAL can be contacted by ringing chairperson Annette White on 2826 7976; email pal.larne@yahoo. com; or see the PAL page on facebook.
