Parade man hit by bottle

A COUNCILLOR has claimed a band parade held in Limavady town centre last week was "grossly over policed".

UUC Councillor Leslie Cubitt made the claim after attending the 'Star of the Roe' annual parade on Friday night. The elected representative has now called on the PSNI to take more consideration into the deployment of officers to events in the town.

Councillor Cubitt said: "Last Friday night's band parade was grossly over policed. I was sitting in Tesco's carpark and was able to count in front of me 20 police officers including three officers on bikes.

"There was no need for that amount of officers in that one specific area. How many more were there about the town? I feel the PSNI are wasting resources where they are not needed." continued Councillor Cubitt.

"They would be better deploying more police to south Armagh and Lurgan where they are needed."

A PSNI spokeswoman refuted the councillor's claims stating "appropriate resources" were put in place on Friday night.

She added that one person was cautioned for on street drinking.

Meanwhile DUP Councillor Alan Robinson hit out after the PSNI confirmed that a bandsman was struck with a bottle at the Friday night parade. The incident happened in the Roemill Gardens area of the town.

Speaking on the matter councillor Robinson said: "This shows that there are some in society who are still intolerant to others."
