At the 5 Star Flame Festival The Lisburn/Castlereagh PEACE III Partnership will also launch the second phase of the joint Sport4Peace Initiative. This project, which is funded through the European Union’s PEACE III Programme, will enable young people to explore their culture and develop an awareness of the issues of sectarianism and racism, through the medium of sport.

Chairman of the Lisburn/Castlereagh PEACE III Partnership, Councillor Tommy Jeffers said: “I am pleased that this event provides an ideal opportunity to launch the second phase of The Partnership’s Sport4Peace Programme. The first phase resulted in positive involvement for our local community which I am sure we can now look forward to building upon.”

Awarded the prestigious London 2012 Olympic Inspire Mark, Sports4Peace originally started in February 2011 under Phase I of the Peace III Programme with upwards of 500 participants.

With the success of the Olympic Games and the prospect of an equally magnificent Paralympics Games it is particularly fitting that the second phase of the Sport4Peace Programme will be launched at this time, harnessing the power of sport as a means of uniting and engaging people from all backgrounds, beliefs and abilities.
