Park and ride development gets underway at Carrick

COMMUTERS at Carrick train station are warned to expect disruption over the next 12 weeks during work to extend the park and ride facility.

Translink is advising that areas of the car park will be closed while the project is ongoing at the former DRD Roads Service depot to provide an additional 160 parking spaces and 11 new disabled spaces.

At present, there are 126 passenger parking spaces, including four disabled spaces. Constructed in 1997, this area is now deemed insufficient to meet demand.

The scheme is part of an investment package to improve the grounds and facilities at the award-winning station. It will involve the demolition of an existing storage shed and the removal of temporary portacabins and storage tanks. Furthermore, there will be new fencing and extended CCTV and lighting.

The public transport company says these improvements will mean a better environment with improved safety and accessibility for all users.

Frank Moore, Northern Area Route Manager, explained: “The new and improved parking spaces at Carrickfergus Station will improve the customer experience and make the train service even more accessible for disabled passengers. Although there may be some disruption at the station while the work is ongoing we will take measures to reduce the impact this has on passengers and local residents.”

NI Railways is assuring passengers that every effort will be made to minimise noise and disruption at the station. The contractor’s working area will be segregated from passenger parking by secure fencing. The majority of work will be carried out during normal working hours, however a section of retaining wall construction will necessitate some night time working.
