Park maintenance is 'disappointing'

A LARNE councillor has urged the local authority to take a more proactive approach when it comes to maintaining the borough's parks.

The statement comes after Alderman Roy Beggs expressed concerns about the condition of footpaths and overgrown briars at Glynn Park.

At the latest meeting of the development committee in Smiley Buildings, members were informed that the issue had been addressed and that an action plan had been implemented to maintain the park and facilitate “a more inclusive and responsive approach”.

Director of development, Linda McCullough said: “The paths around the playground had a covering of dropped pine needles. These have been removed, along with the protruding briars from the hedgerow adjacent to the riverbank.”

She added that the rural squad would visit the park twice a week to empty bins and carry out a litter collection. The road sweeper is also to visit once a week and a parks operative will call at the playground once a week to carry out a visual inspection of the equipment.

But Ald Beggs said: “Frankly, I am disappointed that I had to raise the matter with the council in order to produce all this activity. Whoever is responsible for parks should be taking this approach in relation to all parks in the borough, and not just because it was brought to the council’s attention.”
