Park strife causing havoc in Broughshane

Business in Broughshane may be blooming great but it comes at a very annoying price for local residents, says a local councillor and MLA.

Now Paul Frew has asked Road service to address the issue of inappropriate parking once and for all in the village which has notched up scores of ‘best kept’ and ‘floral’ awards.

He explained: “ Broughshane has a very successful Main Street with a hive of activity from successful businesses to community amenities which are used extensively throughout the full day. One of the repercussions of that success is that many vehicle owners are parking up where they can as well as congestion caused by lorries delivering goods to shops .

“It is also great to have so many people living within a stones throw from the shops and amenities but these residents need to be respected.

“It has been the case that at the exits of some developments namely Pine Court, Shane Court and Fir Park residents have been blocked in or blocked out of their homes when trying to travel to hospital appointments ,trying to bring in vital supplies or medicines to vulnerable loved ones or trying to relieve fellow carers.

“There is also an issue in that when you have people parking on double yellow lines at the immediate exit of a development it narrows the road quite comprehensively which forces drivers who are intending to drive in to stop abruptly which in turns causes the potential for shunts and accidents on the Main Streets which adds to injury and congestions on our streets which ultimately hurts our business .

People are also driving into developments to make three point turns and I would ask people to be aware of the young people who may be out playing on the street in what is a cul da sac .

“This, of course, is not peculiar only to Broughshane alone ,there are many examples of this throughout the borough but I have had to ask that traffic wardens be placed in the villages in order to enforce parking laws.I would ask people to consider residents when parking because to park even for just a few moments can have major ramifications for residents lives.”
