Parking mad: Local man’s video goes viral with 700,000 views!

A young Ahoghill man’s footage of a woman’s half-hour attempt to parallel park on a street in Belfast has become a YouTube sensation, receiving some 700,000 views since it was uploaded on Thursday.

Student Ciaran Doherty recorded the hilarious clip ‘World’s Worst Attempt at Parallel Parking’ on his mobile phone while hanging out with his flatmates, including Dunfane man Ciaran Shannon, in their Fitzroy Avenue flat in the south of the city.

They can be heard laughing throughout the motorist’s repeated attempts to park her silver Vauxhall Corsa.

On one occasion, she performs what seems to be a three-point turn in a desperate bid to get into the space.

Passers-by stop to offer help and one man even comes out of a house on the street to give advice.

One of Mr Doherty’s flatmates said he went out to offer to park the car for the woman before they started to record her efforts.

Another flatmate, Ciaran Shannon from Dunfane in Ballymena said: “It was just absolutely ridiculous. The fact that she was trying to park such a small car and took over 30 minutes to park it.”

The students said they watched her for about 15 minutes before deciding to start recording, not realising it would take her another 15 minutes to complete the manoeuvre.

Her success is met with loud cheers from those watching.

Mr Doherty revealed that the clip had attracted interest from US news organisation including ABC and The New York Times.

In a press interview, he said he was surprised by its success.

“We just uploaded it for the craic but it just got shared and shared. We couldn’t believe it.”
