"We are very proactive in supporting effective research and education and are delighted that the Mayor is supportive of our work.

The Foyle branch of the Parkinson's Disease Society and HURT - charity combating drug abuse locally - are Mayor Paul Fleming's chosen charities this year.

"We are also delighted to be working alongside HURT and look forward to working on some joint fundraising ventures during the Mayoral year," commented Mr Glenn.

Sadie O'Reilly (Project Co-ordinator) from HURT said the Mayor's support of their charity was great news for everyone involved with the group.

"At HURT we look forward to a society where drug related harm is minimised and the range of quality drug and alcohol services are maximised.

"We are delighted that the Mayor is endorsing the work that we do to support those affected by addiction, so that we can improve and help their wellbeing."

Making the announcement at the Guildhall, the Mayor said: "These charities both provide services to families from early years to later years and particularly when they are most vulnerable.

"Both are local charities and all fundraising that we do will go towards local services and will benefit local people. The Parkinson's Disease Society works tirelessly to raise awareness of the disease and to help get a better understanding of Parkinson's and how it affects peoples lives while HURT provides much needed support for drug and alcohol users and their families.

"I am confident that the people of this city, who are renowned for their generosity and goodwill, will support the Mayoral campaign and the chosen charities."

Following the official announcement, the Mayor hosted a charity Coffee Morning in aid of the charities at the Guildhall. Plans are currently underway for other fundraising events throughout the Mayoral year.

All catering for the coffee morning event at the Guildhall was supplied by Noel Kelly Catering, with all proceeds going towards both charities.
