Pass rate praised at Carrick College

THE ‘fantastic’ performance of sixth form students at Carrickfergus College has been praised after A-Level and AS-Level results were announced last week.

Despite exam board CCEA releasing results online from Thursday morning, many pupils chose to return to the school to collect their grades in person.

“Our Year 14 results are fantastic; we have a 99 per cent pass rate for those with two or more A-Levels, and I expect this to go up to 100 per cent after any re-marks,” said College Principal Hedley Webb.

“We also have 72 AS-Level pupils who have done very well, and because we’ve quite a few in the Learning Community some results are still coming in.

“We have Government and Politics as well as a relatively new subject; the students who were studying it this year have done very well and this is only the second year we have had it as an option. IT and Travel and Tourism are really popular choices as well. All in all I’m very pleased with how the students have done and wish them the best in their chosen courses.”

Looking forward to beginning life at university was Adam McMeekin, who achieved an A and two B grades in his exams.

“I did Business Studies, IT and Travel and Tourism, so I’m going on to do Management and Leadership at Jordanstown,” he told the Times. “I didn’t get all the results at once as some of them aren’t with the same exam boards, but I had a good idea from my AS-Level results last year about how I was going to do.”

Meanwhile, Stephen Sproule is preparing to begin an Economics course after achieving two Bs and a C.

“I studied History, Politics and English and I wasn’t overly confident about how I would do in the end, though I was happy with how the exams went in June,” he said.

Outgoing Head Girl, Katie Calderwood expressed her joy at being accepted into her chosen course of Business with IT at Queen’s University Belfast.

“I needed an A and two Bs for the course and I ended up with an A in ICT, an A in Travel and Tourism and a B in Business Studies, so I’m really relieved,” she said.

This year also saw a large number of pupils stay on at the school to study AS-Levels, including lower sixth student Gareth Greenaway.

“I’m happy enough with how I’ve done in the exams; I got two Bs and a C in ICT, Business Studies, Travel and Tourism,” he said.
