Passport row

A CRAIGAVON store has been accused of being selective in its treatment of Irish people.

It has emerged that New Look will not accept an Irish passport as a valid form of ID when applying for a store card but will allow goods to be paid for in Euro, the currency in the Republic of Ireland.

Tommy Sheridan from Drumbeg contacted the ‘MAIL’ after a friend of the family was refused a store card in the Rushmere store after she presented her Irish passport as ID.

“It’s ridiculous,” said Tommy. “She was told a British passport was OK but an Irish one wasn’t. But they’ll accept Euros.

“My daughter-in-law has a card with the store and she was with her friend when her Irish passport was refused.”

When the ‘MAIL’ contacted the store at Rushmere we were told identification must be provided to prove the person signing up for a store card lives in Northern Ireland. This can be either a British passport or ID containing a postcode in Northern Ireland.

Tommy added: “I don’t see what the difference is between an Irish passport and a British passport. They’ve both got the same details on them and neither of them gives your address.”
