Pastor’s Pen: Ask yourself, do you know who Jesus is?

Many of us grew up singing the ‘golden oldie’ hymns written in what is now considered by some to be archaic language.

Many of these hymns have been sadly modernised with everyday language. To be sure, there are many great modern hymns using everyday language and which speak volumes of God’s love and Jesus. Regardless of the language, it is all to do with worship and adoration of the One eternal God, creator of all things.

Nevertheless, the old language transports us out of the ordinary and into realms of praise with the company of heaven. We must never forget who it is we are worshipping and what it means to worship this awesome eternal God, the who sent His own Son to die for us.

Sheila Walsh writes in one of her devotionals: “Worship changes everything. It infuses the ordinary with eternity and lifts our eyes and our hearts above our lives and into our eternal destiny.”

Do you know Jesus? Mark Lowery wrote a beautiful hymn asking Mary the question: Do you know your son?

Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day walk on water?

Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?

Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?

This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you.

Mary did you know that your baby boy will make a blind man see?

Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?

Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?

And when you kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.

The blind will see, the deaf will hear and the dead will live again.

The lame will leap, the mute will speak, the praises of the lamb.

Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?

Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?

Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?

This sleeping child you’re holding is the great I Am.

This Christmas may we sing with the angels and company of heaven. Worship we the godhead, love be yours and love be mine, the Love of God.

May you know the love, peace and joy of the Saviour this Christmas.
