Pastor’s Pen: Do you ever change your mind?

By Mary HendersonA friend of mine recently emailed me a photograph of myself and a few others at a wedding which took place when we were all in our late teens. My first response was ‘Oh did I really look like that?’

It was absolutely great to see the photograph and to take a trip down memory lane. However, looking more closely at the photograph I could see that our clothes, hairstyles, body shapes and sizes have somewhat changed.

Change is all around us. Over the years we have seen changes in our education system, health care provision, government structures and more recently within our councils.

The older we get the more changes we experience. There are changes that create a ‘good feel factor’ from within. Some change, however, can bring with it a measure of uncertainty, fear, loneliness or anxiety.

What changes are you facing at this moment in time? Could it be that you have moved to a new house, locality or job? Are you facing a financial crisis, a broken relationship, children leaving home, health issues or a job loss?

So often we get caught up with the tangible changes in our lives, albeit important, but do we ever stop and think about the changes that God wants us to focus on? God calls us to have a change of heart and a change of mind – a renewing of our minds.

We find in the book of Romans 12v2 that God wants us not to “conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed (changed) by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

A “renewed mind” means that we are to ‘put off’ or ‘take off’ any hurt, doubt, rebellion, self-centredness, bitterness, corrupt thinking or any barrier that would separate us from God. Then we are to ‘put on’ the Mind of the Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5). We can do this by confessing, repenting and then handing our lives over to Him through the Lord Jesus Christ. It is only then will we know what his good, pleasing and perfect will for our lives.

Don’t be afraid or avoid making changes for God in your life and most importantly of all don’t leave change too late.

Our thinking determines our transformation. What is your thinking process like?
