Pastor’s Pen: How much is your soul worth?

By Rev Alan MillarNot too long ago a woman, Lori N. offered her soul on eBay for $2,000 after a car accident left her strapped for cash. Needless to say there were no takers. In any event eBay has a “no selling soul” policy, which means they are neutral on the question of the existence of the human soul.

Before answering such a ponderous question perhaps there are other questions that need to be asked and answered like, what is the soul? Can you sell your soul? Can it be lost?

The Bible makes 341 references to the ‘soul’. Jesus not only believed that we had souls, but that our souls could be offered for sale and purchased. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26)

Near the end of the film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Friar Tuck confronts the greedy bishop and says to him, “Well your grace, you sold your soul to the devil.” The bishop had gained much wealth at the expense of his eternal soul.

Jesus has already paid the price for your soul. On the cross at Calvary His blood was the payment demanded. But you must offer your soul, yourself, to Him to make the purchase complete.

To sell your soul is to give yourself over to the control of the purchaser. You belong to the one who purchases your soul. Satan will offer you the world for your soul, just as he did Jesus during the temptations. But when your life is over what then will happen to your soul? Your soul is Satan’s property and when you die it is still his and since Jesus said that a place has been prepared for the devil and all his angels (and those who have sold their souls to him) will for all eternity be confined to eternal hell. Jesus spoke of this in Matthew 16:26 quoted above.

But by accepting Jesus as your saviour, that is allowing Him to purchase your soul, your life, your will, when you die you will inherit a place in the kingdom of God, a kingdom that is love and light, joy and eternal happiness.

Who have you sold your soul to?

Even if you have sold your soul to Satan it can still be redeemed. Let me finish with words from verse 2 of that wonderful hymn, To God be the glory - “O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, to every believer the promise of God; the vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.”

Praise the Lord!
