Pastor’s Pen: It’s more than just a little good news

By Rev Alan MillarMy wife, Iris and I mostly had similar tastes in music. There were exceptions like her love of Rod Stewart and Meatloaf - never could figure that one out!

However, we both liked Ann Murray. One of her songs was ‘A little good news’.

In the first verse she sings about the depressing bad news on the morning TV show. The second verse goes like this: ‘There’s a local paper rolled up in a rubber band, one more sad story’s one more than I can stand. Just once how I’d like to see the headline say, “Not much to print today, can’t find nothin’ bad to say...”

How great it would be to hear news readers say, “This morning we’ve no bad news, only good news to report. Peace has broken out all over the world. There’s been no one mugged, robbed or murdered. The hospitals are doing well, and the economy is booming.

Then we waken up to reality - the evil and cruelty around us. The Jordanian pilot, Lt. Moaz al-Kasasbeh, brutally murdered; increased fighting and more deaths in Ukraine; IS brutality spreading its evil over the Middle East, and anti-semitism massively on the rise, even in the UK - we sure could use a little good news today.

Well I happen to have more than a little good news, and it’s not that God’s watching us from a distance. Mercifully, God is with us. He is our only hope and strength, a very present help in trouble. Only God can fix what man cannot. He has not left us abandoned. He is with us, which is ‘especially good news’ for today. The evils we see are simply signs that the Lord Jesus Christ is on His way to rule the nations. Praise God!

Read for yourself 2 Timothy 3, ‘Perilous Times’. We are not alone. God is with us in the midst of the battle. He will be victorious. His purposes will be fulfilled.

When Jesus died on the cross and was buried, to His followers evil had won and the world descended into darkness. But praise God He rose from the dead, victorious over the powers of the darkness of sin and the evil of Satan. He was and is victorious.

So, dear friends, take heart in the words of Jesus in John 16:33 “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Now that is great news!
