Pastor's Pen: Open your eyes to the truth

A computer generated picture I have looks like a bunch of squiggly lines, curls and swirls of various hews of green and black. In truth it is a 3D piece of art that when viewed according to the instructions shows a hammer-head shark and some fish swimming in a rocky sea cavern.

Many people have failed to see the true image, they just cannot see beyond the surface. Others, like me when I first saw the squiggles, were sceptical or downright unbelieving. I refused to believe the truth that there really was something of beauty beyond what my eyes saw. Then one day I became curious, read the instructions and my eyes were opened to the amazing true picture.

It is sad that society is full of people with the attitude I had, refusing to believe that God is the author of all that is seen and unseen, and that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, the giver of true peace.

Recently my wife and I watched the film ‘God’s Not Dead’. It is the story of a first year philosophy student, a Christian, whose professor is an atheist and who challenges the young Christian to prove before the class that God exists. None of the other students were believers - perhaps they had never given any thought to the existence of God, their eyes were closed to the truth that God is the creator of all things visible and invisible.

Over several weeks the young man presented his arguments all the while being derided by the professor. At the end of his presentation all the class stood up and agreed that God was not dead. He had opened their eyes to the truth.

If you have never considered God or His existence, or the peace that believing in Jesus can give you, or that you can live forever in Heaven, then ask someone who knows first hand. Ask Jesus Himself, after all, He died so that your sins would be forgiven. I pray that the Holy Spirit will open your mind to the truth, that God loves you.

Just pray: Jesus, I believe that you died on the cross to take away my sins so that I could live forever in Your glorious kingdom. Please, open my eyes to Your truth. God be merciful to me, a sinner. Amen.
