By Rev Billy DavisonEverything looked fine as spectators gathered recently to watch the Army freefall display team performing at the Whitehaven Airshow in Cumbria.

A jump, which two Parachute Regiment friends do up to 50 times a year, was about to take place. They were part of a six-man team jumping from a PAC 750 aircraft. Within a moment of the jump, a full scale and frightening drama unfolded as anxious spectators looked on from the ground.

As the first two skydivers jumped, their parachutes got tangled together causing a near catastrophe as spectators looked on anxiously. Thankfully, one of the divers was able to manoeuvre his parachute into position, so that his friend could grab hold of it. He was then able to guide both of them to the safety of the town’s Queen’s Dock where they landed safely in the water.

Life often throws up unexpected twists and turns which were never anticipated. What do you do when frightened by something beyond your control?

One day the followers of Jesus found themselves in a very frightening situation as they crossed the Sea of Galilee. Suddenly, a great windstorm rose causing high waves to batter their boat, and they thought they would be drowned. But there was one person in their boat who was able to help them. His name was Jesus. He was asleep on a cushion while the disciples were frantic with fear. They woke him and said to him: “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

He responded to their prayer for help. “And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still’ and the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”

Jesus is powerful to save in the most desperate of situations, and we need never be afraid if we trust Him as our Saviour and Lord. As the apostle Paul says: “If God be for us who can be against us.” Romans 8:31
