Patrols to be stepped up to curb on-street drinking

COLERAINE Borough Council's Environmental Health Department is increasing their enforcement patrols, in order to address the rising problem of on-street drinking.

On-street drinking has been blamed for incidents of anti-social behaviour and Coleraine Council, in partnership with the PSNI, will be stepping up their campaign to detect those individuals who continually abuse the system.

Officers will be targeting locations where on-street drinking bye-laws are not in place.

Kieran Doherty, Director of Environmental Health explained: “Many businesses in the Borough are heavily reliant on the tourist trade and Council is eager to promote the area as a family-friendly resort.

“On-street drinking does not have a place in our vision to promote this Borough as an area in which to live, work and visit.

“The consumption of alcohol in public places is controlled through Council bye-laws, and detections are made by PSNI.

“Council is currently reviewing the Drinking in Public Places bye-laws, and following a consultation, new areas will be added to the existing list of streets and areas where on-street drinking is prohibited.”
