Paul, who is the Creative Director of LJHSTV, was invited to take part in the Fifth Annual President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge conference.

The Campus Challenge is an initiative launched by President Obama to emphasise interfaith cooperation and community service as an important way to build understanding between different communities - something with which Paul has been heavily involved. The conference welcomes faith and educational leaders from right across the globe to come together and share their own experiences of building communities.

“I’ve been told they invited people who they believed could make a difference in their own communities,” Paul explained. “It’s great for us at LJHSTV - this is a prestigious conference and we are delighted to be invited to attend.”

LJHSTV is a social enterprise based in Lurgan, and it specialises in making documentary films that highlight social issues and stimulate debate and discussion. Paul founded the company during his time working as a Media and IT teacher at Lurgan Junior High School, therefore it is no surprise that many of his films focus on the topic of education.

“During the conference, I’ll be presenting a film I made,” Paul said, “entitled ‘Ticking the Box?’. It’s about community engagement and is the second film that LJHSTV made in the US.”

This won’t be the first time that LJHSTV has received transatlantic recognition for its work, as the film, ‘A Step Too Far - A Contemplation On Forgiveness’, was named Best Feature Documentary at the Chicago Peace on Earth Film Festival last year.

Paul has been establishing connections with the educational sector in America for years, and ‘Ticking the Box?’ was shot entirely in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, last January. While at the White House, Paul will be able to expand his links further - rubbing shoulders with some local educational pioneers.

“During the trip, I’ll have two visits to the White House,” Paul shared. “One is a ‘meet and greet’, and then I will be talking to the office about the work I’m doing here in Northern Ireland.

“I’m also having dinner with the presidents of both Georgetown and Howard University.”

Paul’s trip is sure to make way for future transatlantic opportunities in the fields of education and community, but effecting change in Northern Ireland remains a
priority.

“We’ve been nominated for the ‘One to Watch’ award as part of Social Enterprise Awards NI,” noted Paul, “and we’re always looking for local support.”

LJHSTV certainly appear to be gathering support on both sides of the ocean, and to find out more about their projects, visit www.ljhstv.com
