The structure, which was funded by the European Union and developed by Ilex, the urban regeneration company for Londonderry, received the Civic Trust Northern Ireland Award and their National Panel’s Special Award at a ceremony in Cardiff on Saturday and also came out top in the Judge’s Choice category at the Northern Ireland Sustainable Planning Awards at Stormont on Tuesday.

Welcoming the news, Ilex’s Programme Manager, Ciaran Doherty said: “These are terrific accolades and we are thrilled that they have been bestowed upon the Peace Bridge which has transformed our cityscape and brought tremendous benefits to people and businesses in our region.

“On Monday we published the overwhelmingly positive results of a survey which was carried out with the people of the city about their use of and attitudes to the Peace Bridge and these prestigious awards, and others, prove that it isn’t just a hit with locals, it is gaining broad recognition for its architectural significance and contribution to our built environment.

“I would like to pay tribute to all those involved in driving forward the Peace Bridge project which remains the largest funding granted in Ireland by the European Peace Programme. We, in Ilex, are extremely proud to have played such an integral role in its development and hope that it will continue to be a catalyst for change in the city.”
