Pedal power helps boost charity funds

Gerard Smyth thanked all who helped him raise 4,501.56 for his gruelling 430-mile cycle from Malin Head to Mizen Head.

The keen cyclist was delighted to more than double his original target of 2,000, he said: "Initially the thought of raising so much was daunting.

"So many friends, relatives and businesses helped out taking sponsor forms or donating prizes for the raffle in the Bay Hall.

"There certainly was a great feel good factor in helping out such a worthwhile cause."

Gerard cycled from Ireland's most northern point, Malin Head, down the spine of the island to the most southern point Mizen Head in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

He went on: "I had prepared for typical Irish weather, cycling in all four seasons.

"But it was tremendous, the weather couldn't have been better there was not a single drop of rain for the whole week.

"The Marie Curie people who organised it were great, they had everything planned out to the smallest detail and we were well fed - I think I put on weight there was so much food."

Gerard completed the journey in a group of 42 people, he added: "The group was of people with varying cycling abilities and we all helped to get each other across the finish line.

"Everyone enjoyed it and there was a real sense of achievement.

"I would definitely recommend the challenge to anyone, it was well organised and you make some great friends."
