Pedestrian refuges considered forBelsize Road

FOLLOWING a campaign by local residents, Roads Service are considering installing pedestrian refuges on the Belsize Road and Harmony Hill.

Residents concerned about the traffic in the area have campaigned for a roundabout at the junction of the two roads in the hope of slowing down the traffic and making it easier for pedestrians to cross the roads.

However, according to Lisburn Councillor Ronnie Crawford, Roads Service did not feel the criteria for installing a roundabout had been met but indicated that pedestrian refuges may assist local people who are attempting to cross the busy roads.

“I had requested the Roads Service to install a roundabout at the junction of Harmony Hill and Belsize Roads in order to reduce the speed of some vehicles,” explained Mr Crawford. “Most residents are opposed to speed ramps being used for this purpose.

“The Roads Service do not think the junction is suitable for this purpose but are now considering placing pedestrian refuges in the centre of each of the roads in view of their breadth, which will facilitate pedestrians, particularly those going to and from Harmony Hill Primary School and enable them to cross the road more safely,” continued Mr Crawford.

“The Roads Service are also to install a white line on Whitla Road at the junction of Ardis Avenue as there have been a number of accidents there which have caused damage to residential property,” he added.

“These proposals are very much welcome.”
