From grand mansions to bustling arcades, and schools to industrial mills, these abandoned buildings tell stories of prestige, tragedy, and mysterious legends.
Here are 10 abandoned buildings across Northern Ireland that you may not be able to visit, but still have a story to tell:
9. Lisnamurrican Primary School, 71 Rathkeel Road, Broughshane
This primary school near Ballymena was attended by James Nesbitt, with his father ‘Jim’ Nesbitt being the school’s principal. In 2003, the school was hit by a damaging scandal when thieves stole the building’s heating oil and some computer equipment. Three years later, the school closed its doors due to falling numbers. 10. Gilford Mill, 13 Dunbarton Street, Gilford
This now abandoned linen mill opened in 1841. At its height, the mill produced enough yarn each week to have circumvented the earth three times and enough each month to reach the moon and beyond. This yarn was exported all over the world, including the USA, Argentina, South Africa, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.During World War II, the village was home to thousands of British, Belgian and American troops, with the mill’s yard proving ideal for a concealed training location. The Mill finally shut in 1986, with only 167 employees remaining. Photo: Ulster Architectural Heritage website
