Agencies praised for Carrickfergus flood response

Staff from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Department for Infrastructure, NI Water and Mid and East Antrim have been praised for their response to flooding in Carrick yesterday (Tuesday).

The agencies responded to reports of rising water in the Woodburn area of the town during Storm Francis.

In a statement issued to this newspaper, a spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive said: “One tenant in the Maple Gardens area contacted our Customer Services Unit at 2.30pm yesterday (Tuesday) to report rising water levels in the garden.

“Given the stormy conditions yesterday our staff were quickly in the area to assess the situation. Mid and East Antrim Council and the Department for Infrastructure were also in the area.

“The council provided sandbags where necessary. Staff have spoken with the tenant who confirmed that no water entered their home, and there was no internal damage.

“If tenants are affected by flooding they should contact us on 03448 920 901. There is also helpful information on our website www.nihe.gov.uk”

Carrick DUP representative, Cllr Cheryl Johnston has thanked the relevant bodies for their prompt actions.

Speaking to the Times, Cllr Johnston said: “We had three houses severely affected, throughout Carrickfergus to Ballycarry,

“Once the office received the calls from concerned and distressed constituents, the relevant agencies were contacted and urgent support was provided within the hour.

“Thankfully everyone received the assistance they needed and further works will be completed in the coming weeks where required.

“I would like to thank, the Department for Infrastructure, Housing Executive and NI water who all responded professionally and promptly in a time of high demand and challenging circumstances.
