Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon: Many residents upset after bins not emptied since before Christmas with almost 4 weeks of rubbish piling up

Residents who have not had bins emptied since before Christmas have pleaded with Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council to prioritise their trash.

Despite calls to Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council, some residents, particularly in the central Craigavon area, have not had bins emptied since the Thursday before Christmas.

Residents left bins out on that Saturday as required but no one from the council came to collect the rubbish. Again, as bins were due to be collected on New Year’s Day – also a Thursday – residents put their bins out on Saturday to be emptied but no bin lorries arrived.

“It’s outrageous. We pay high rates and expect a decent service. Now they are blaming the snow but there was no snow on Christmas week. What’s their excuse for not lifting the bins then?” said an angry resident.

Another local woman said: “I am so upset. It has spoiled Christmas for me and my family as we have nowhere to put the growing piles of rubbish.”

A spokesperson for Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council said: “We are currently working on recovery operations for missed bins over the holiday period along with householders who have been significantly impacted due to snow and ice.

“We ask residents to continue to leave their bin out for collection and apologise for any inconvenience.”

Meanwhile a Council spokesperson said this morning: "Due to the significant number of missed bin collections caused by continued snow and ice this week – BLACK (general waste) and GREEN (recyclables) bins will be prioritised for the rest of this week.

"BROWN (food & organic waste) bins will not be collected until your next scheduled collection. Please do not put your brown bin out for collection.

"Missed collections (BLACK & GREEN Bins) from Saturday 3 January and Monday 5 January will be collected during this week.

"We ask households to continue to leave their Black and/or Green bin out for collection.”

Brown Bins due for collection on the following dates will not be collected until your next scheduled collection: • Saturday 3 January • Monday 5 January • Tuesday 6 January • Wednesday 7 January • Thursday 8 January • Friday 9 January
