Alex Patterson started losing his sight approximately 15 years ago and although he is now registered as nlind, he does still have some sight.
Alex was matched with his guide dog Angus just over one year ago and, after intensive training, they both qualified at the end of July 2025.
Training is still ongoing and Guide Dog Mobility Specialists are in regular contact with Alex, answering any questions he may have and completing regular training check-ups.
Angus has given Alex so much independence and the confidence to go out walking, without always having to have a family member with him.
Alex wanted to raise money as a ‘thank you’ to Guide Dogs who have supported him and Angus along their journey.
On Saturday, July 4, a Table Quiz was held in Anna's Kitchen Bake in Carnany Court, Ballymoney – to raise money for and to raise awareness about Guide Dogs.
One of the quiz rounds was dedicated to Guide Dogs with general knowledge and myth busting questions. After the table quiz, which was hosted by Cllr Lee Kane, Anna and her staff provided an amazing supper consisting of traditional Polish dishes.
The variety was vast and guests got to sample two traditional soups, plus many main dishes and side dishes. There was even a delicious Polish style cheesecake for dessert!
The organisers said: “Lee did a fabulous job and we are very grateful to him for giving up his Saturday evening. Thanks also to Anna and her amazing team for the delicious food, great service and allowing Alex to hold the event in their premises.
“A huge thanks also goes to Emma, from Causeway Crafters NI (Main Street, Ballymoney) who has helped immensely with her commitment and ongoing support for Guide Dogs. Emma stocks a wide range of official Guide Dog merchandise in her shop and also has a large Collection Dog in store if you wish to donate/support this life changing work.
"A super total of £520 was raised on the night and this was presented to Viv and Jennifer from Antrim and Ballymena Guide Dog Fundraising Group. Thanks to everyone who came along on the night and who supported the event.
"Additional donations have been given and these will be added to future fundraising events. Alex is hoping to complete a sponsored walk in the Autumn to raise additional funds for Guide Dogs.
"It now costs a massive £77,000 to breed, raise and train a guide dog and any money raised/donated to Guide Dogs is very much appreciated.”
Typically, guide dog puppies are born in the home of a volunteer Breeding Dog Holder. Then, at around eight weeks of age, they’re transferred to the National Centre for their puppy health checks, before going home to a volunteer Puppy Raiser.
Once they start their training at around 14 months old, they stay at regional centres or with one of the charity’s volunteer Fosterers where they develop their social skills among other things – this is their last stop before being matched with their guide dog owner at around two-years-old.
