All six are experienced open water swimmers having competed in a variety of triathlons and swimming events.

Supported by two ribs (rigid inflatable boats), the participants will enter the water at 1.45pm to start the swim.

Organiser Gary Davison explained that extensive preparation has gone into organising the fundraiser.

Gary said: “The swimmers will swim in buddy groups of three with a safety boat 20m away but alongside looking after each group of three swimmers.

“The swim will be done in three legs, the first leg will be with an incoming tide which will push the swimmers towards Belfast. Slack water before and after high tide will then allow for easier swimming over to Carrickfergus Castle.

“The swimmers will make the final leg and come ashore on the beach beside the castle, were they will be met by family who will welcome them ashore.

“They hope to raise £6000 for two charities, the NHS and Belfast Lough Sailability based in Carrickfergus.”

The swimmers have set up a just giving page for those who would like to support their effort: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/belfastloughswim2020
