A new exhibition is being developed to explore crime and punishment down the years in Mid and East Antrim.

It follows on from an initiative last year which saw Carrickfergus Museum enjoy a successful partnership working with the Carrickfergus and District Historical Society and Linenhall Library, Belfast, to uncover the hidden stories of women held in Carrickfergus jail.

The programme was part of the library’s ‘Making the Future Project’, funded by PEACE IV. It supported a number of local people to carry out research and visit places such as the Public Records Office, Crumlin Road Gaol and Down County Museum.

A Carrickfergus Museum spokesperson said: “They explored the conditions faced by women and the crimes they committed. Some even made contact with researchers in Tasmania and Australia uncovering the stories of those who were transported.

“Their work was featured in an exhibition which was held in Carrickfergus Museum.

“Now we are looking ahead to a more ambitious project, working with partners from Queen’s University, Belfast, to develop a touring exhibition exploring crime and punishment in Mid and East Antrim with Carrickfergus jail featuring as the main case study.”
