Karen Bell ran between Whitehead, Carrickfergus and Whiteabbey after the London Marathon was cancelled due to Covid.

The mother-of-two covered 26.2 miles in support of global development and Tearfund, which works in the world’s 50 most poor countries

Karen had been a runner for 10 years, but it wasn’t until after hearing some inspiring stories during the London Marathon in 2019 that she decided to train for one.

“So many people who had never run before were taking on the challenge for so many good causes,” Karen said. “I thought if they can do it, then surely I could give it a go. I entered the ballot and was very shocked when I heard I got a place.”

But then the pandemic hit, and Karen was unable to participate in the marathon as planned. However, that didn’t stop her creating her own challenge.

“I was worried about running a virtual marathon as there wouldn’t be the same crowds and the support that goes with it, but on the day itself the support from family, friends and those in Seapark AC (my running club) really helped to make the day extra special and one I’ll never forget.”

Originally setting herself a target of £300, Karen has raised over £1,000.

“I never expected to raise as much as I have. After two good friends suggested I choose a charity and said they would donate, I had no hesitation in choosing Tearfund.

“I had just read the latest edition of their magazine which featured the story of Tamam, a mother from Northern Syria. She lost everything when the conflict came to her village and had to flee with her children to Lebanon. I can only imagine what that must be like and hopefully the money raised for Tearfund can help in some small way.”

Glen Mitchell, Tearfund’s NI director, said: ‘We are so thankful to Karen and others like her who are getting creative and finding new ways to support our work around the world. This means people like Tamam in Lebanon are receiving essential aid and help in rebuilding their lives.

“The support we receive through people like Karen is enabling us to carry out life-giving work amongst the world’s poorest communities. Thank you!’
