Community to line out for popular teacher and GAA stalwart Fergus Fleming

Craigavon has been plunged into sorrow at the death of popular teacher and GAA stalwart Fergus Fleming.

Mr Fleming, who had retired from teaching after 30 years at St Anthony’s Primary School in Craigavon, had been a highly regarded by pupils and teachers alike.

He was also steeped in the GAA and had been a former committee member, treasurer and secretary of Eire Og GAC in Craigavon.

Tributes have been flooding social media since Mr Fleming’s death in Craigavon yesterday (Sunday August 30).

From Drumgor Park, Fergus was married to Pauline and was the father of Eoin, Gemma and Ciaran.

A private funeral will take place with a Requiem Mass taking place at a later date, details of which will be published by Quinn Bros Funeral Directors.

The undertaker said: “Those wishing to pay their respects to Fergus can do so this morning (Tuesday at Drumgor Park at 10.00am, at Eire Og Club at 10.10am or at St. Anthony’s School at 10.20am whilst adhering to social distancing.”

Meanwhile his former school paid tribute to him in a heartfelt post on Facebook.

St. Anthony’s Primary School, Craigavon said: “It is with great sadness that we have to inform you of the passing of our great friend and former teacher Mr Fergus Fleming.

“Fergus educated the children of the area for over 30 years and will be fondly remembered by all for his wonderful knowledge, good counsel and his great sense of humour.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Pauline, sons Eoin and Ciaran, and his daughter Mrs Gemma Vassallo who is our current Nursery teacher.”

Eire Og GAC posted on Facebook: “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the passing of our former committee member, treasurer and secretary Fergus Fleming.

“As everyone will know, Fergus was a phenomenal man who was the epitome of what a club volunteer should be. His immeasurable contribution to our club life over the last 20 years in both our brightest and darkest times will live long in our clubs history.

“Also a former teacher in St. Anthony’s Primary School, as both an educator and work colleague Fergus left his unique and warm mark on all those fortunate to cross paths with him.

“The loss of his wit, wisdom and no problem too big attitude to life is a void we will struggle to replace.

“On behalf of everyone in Éire Óg, we would like offer our sincerest condolences to his wife Pauline, his sons and current senior players Eoin and Ciaran, his daughter Gemma, son in law Chris, daughter-in-law Kelly and all his grandchildren along with the wider family circle.

Fergus’ death is deeply regretted by his loving wife, daughter, sons, daughter-in-law Kelly, son- in-law Chris, grandchildren Molly, Rosie and Josie, sisters Iciar, Fionnuala, Ethne, Niamh and Aideen, brothers Eamonn and Ciaran, nieces, nephews and family circle.
